Reassessing Eastern Mediterranean Tectonics and Earthquake Hazard From the 365 CE Earthquake

چکیده
The hallmark of great earthquakes in the Mediterranean is 21 July 365 CE earthquake and tsunami that destroyed cities killed thousands people throughout Eastern Mediterranean. This event intriguing because most subduction forearcs exhibit pervasive crustal extension minimal definitive evidence exists for megathrust earthquakes, consistent with weak seismic coupling. conundrum has led many to favor rupture a previously unrecognized upper plate splay fault south Crete an M w 8.3–8.5 earthquake, uplifting Cretan Holocene paleoshoreline by up 9 m. Similar source mechanisms have been adapted region, which are commonly used hazard estimation. We present alternative model uplift centers on known active normal systems offshore western southwestern Crete. use new published radiocarbon dates historical records show likely occurred during two or more within 2–3 centuries. Visco-elastic dislocation modeling demonstrates these faults fits observed data as well reverse models but requires reduced slip lower cumulative energy release (?M 7.9). Tsunami shows normal-fault ruptures produce strong tsunamis better match reports than hypothetical fault. Our findings collectively interpretation damaging can originate faults, highlighting potential from tsunamigenic earthquakes.

متن کامل4.5) Coatzacoalcos-Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico earthquake: implications for tectonics and seismic hazard of the region
متن کاملMediterranean megaturbidite triggered by the AD 365 Crete earthquake and tsunami
Historian Ammianus Marcellinus documented the devastating effects of a tsunami hitting Alexandria, Egypt, on July 21, AD 365. "The solidity of the earth was made to shake … and the sea was driven away. The waters returning when least expected killed many thousands by drowning. Huge ships… perched on the roofs of houses… hurled miles from the shore….". Other settlements around the Mediterranean ...
متن کاملCE 180: Experimental Methods in Earthquake Engineering
This experiment consists of determining the modal properties of a model structure. Many buildings in the practical world can be reasonably approximated by shear structures in which only one translational degree of freedom is taken into account for each floor level. Due to the simple characteristics of a shear structure, it is possible to determine its modal properties, such as the natural frequ...
متن کاملHazard Mitigation for Earthquake and Subsequent Fire
This paper is a progress report of a MCEER research project on the development of multihazard protection technologies for critical facilities. One important component is to consider earthquake and earthquake induced hazards (e.g. fire, haz-mat leakage, power outrage, etc). This paper is concerned with earthquake and subsequent fire hazards. Records from historical earthquakes show that sometime...
